DR. REED VIDEO FEATURE
BLYTHEWOOD--  When Hope Reed teaches, she does it like she actually cares. Students raise their hands, ask questions and Reeds answers are so detailed it makes the students understand every problem, and they probably could remember it for a lifetime.

Reed is a devoted Algebra 1 and Geometry teacher for Blythewood High School. She tries her best every day to make sure each student meets the South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards.

She does all of these things, and she is also the head of all the Math Seminar classes.

Math Seminar is a program for students who need a better understanding of Algebra 1. Many students will go to "Foundation" instead of Algebra 1, and this is a huge problem, because students need Algebra 2 before they can even try getting into college. Math Seminar gives them this chance to prove they can take Algebra and be successful in it also.

BLYTHEWOOD-- A 9 year old girl tells her mom to listen to a song that she has written. This girl had only just learned how to play the guitar that same year so her mom wasn’t expecting much. The young girl begins singing the song while playing her guitar. As the girl sings on, her mom realizes that her daughter is talented.

This young girl is Sofia Lynch, now a 14 year old freshman at Blythewood High School. Raised by Kristin Lynch, her mother, who is an engineer but does opera singing as a hobby, and Eric Lynch, her father, who is also an engineer. Sofia has two sisters, a younger one and an older one.

“After hearing her song, I took her to my opera coach. Her coach was getting ready to teach her opera, but I asked her to give a listen to Sofia’s song. Then Sofia performed her song, and the coach said ‘Oh. We aren’t going to teach her opera.’ We both saw Sofia’s true potential and that’s really when she began singing,” Mrs. Lynch said.

BLYTHEWOOD-- Micaiah Simon is at her best friend’s house talking with some of her friends when she gets a text from her dad. She smiles at her phone then puts it down.

Micaiah Simon goes to Blythewood High School, where she is a junior who takes all AP or honors courses, and is on the soccer team. Along with this, Simon has lived her whole life with her dad being a part of the army, with frequent deployments.

Her situation has brought her and her family very close together.

“I have a really close relationship with my family, we try to do something together whenever we can and I tell my mom and my sister, Amari, everything,” says Simon.

Her close bonds with her family have helped her with the negative effects of her dad being deployed.
