Foreign Language effect on Blythewood students

BY CIARA PURDAY Freshman

BLYTHEWOOD-- Taking a different language in high school can affect students in positive and negative ways because it is a challenge.

Learning a different language may seem difficult but having teachers such as Blocker and Boyte can help the student learn the language.

Blocker and Boyte are Spanish teachers at BHS and enjoy teaching their students.

Taking on the challenge in high school may scare students but Blocker and Boyt assures the students to take the challenge.

“My suggestion to students when they decide to take on the language is to be prepared to learn the language. Including the culture,” Ms. Blocker said.

Practicing the language outside of school also can help the student learn the language.

“I suggest to my students to watch movies, watching television shows, listening to music with the language  and speaking the language with friends and family,” Botye said.

Taking the language also helps the students learn about the culture.

“Taking my French class to France was an amazing experience for them because they learned things that they had never learned before,” Blythewood Middle School French teacher Ms.Catoe said.
Taking trips such as these help the students learn the language, clothing, food and history.

Learning in the school is not the only thing students will be able to use the language in.

Taking a language is also important because of the future.

High schoolers are required to take the SAT’s and taking a language helps with the material.

“All of the languages come from a Latin root which helps on the test because of the vocabulary,” Blocker said.

Tests are not the only thing taking a language helps with.

“College’s now a days look at students that have taken a language in school,” Blocker said.

College is becoming more expensive but having the language helps increase the students chance on getting into the college.

Also the career with the students decide to pursue, the language may help them too.

Having the language can increase the students chance on receiving the job.

Learning a language in high school affects students not only in the classroom but in the future.
