Making the South Carolina Region Orchestra

BY KRISTIAN JOHNSON, Freshman

BYTHEWOOD--The South Carolina Region Orchestra first started in 1961, and that same year, the first All Star Orchestra was born.

Now in 2014, the Region Orchestra keeps improving.

Christian Derek Aguilar is a freshman at Blythewood High School, who auditioned this year for the 2014 Region Orchestra.

The audition for this year was in October and preparing for the audition can vary.

It took Aguilar almost a month and a half, to prepare for the audition. Meanwhile, Freshman Liza Hunter started preparing in April of 2014. However, it only took Freshman Trinity Howell about 2 months to prepare.

They all recommend doing Region Orchestra. “Of course! I would recommend Region Orchestra. You learn a lot from the other students,” Aguilar said.

“I would recommend region to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge or music and do something outside of school orchestra,” Howell said.

Although Aguilar was the only freshman who made Region Orchestra 2014, Howell and Hunter still have learned what they need to work on.

“In order to do better on my audition next year, I have improved on note reading and shifting and extensions with my fingers,” Howell said.

“I have been working on tone quality to improve on from the audition,” Hunter said.

Soon after Aguilar made Region Orchestra, the practices started.

"We practiced for about a month. Two rehearsals with the whole orchestra. One the day before the concert and rehearsal right before the concert."

According to, all three freshmen, they can not wait to audition again next year.
