BLYTHEWOOD- Imagine this: Today is Thursday, Sept. 8. The sky is clear, save a few clouds. The late bell for third period just rang, and students have just managed to dash to class just in time for the lesson to start, when suddenly they hear five gunshots from just down the hall. Everyone around you is screaming and their teacher is trying to calm everyone down, ushering them into cabinets and beneath desks. This is probably what it was like to be a student at Alpine high school just weeks ago.
School shootings seem to be pretty common in America. In fact, this past month, there was another one down in Texas at Alpine high school.
Most of the time, many would assume a terrorist would commit a crime like this, but this time, it was a 14-year-old freshman. Her motives are still unknown, but it is suspected that she had intended to kill her step-brother.
She never made it to this point, however, because another student walked into the bathroom right as she was loading the gun. She attempted to shoot the other student, but missed a fatal shot.
The other student received a bullet to her lower back, barely missing her spine and avoiding paralysis. Most likely fearing the consequences, the freshman shot herself instead.
“I’m not surprised, some people are just plain crazy,” said Briana Metzler.
“I think she was in the wrong, and should have been seeking help [with the problems she had with her brother, whatever they may be.]” Metzler said
“It’s honestly not shocking at this point,” said Jordan Hightower. “I feel like violence has become such a normal part of our everyday lives.”
More mass shootings happen at school here in America than any other country according to CNN.com. We can only hope that the violence will decrease these next few years.
