BLYTHEWOOD-- When Hope Reed teaches, she does it like she
actually cares. Students raise their hands, ask questions and Reeds answers are
so detailed it makes the students understand every problem, and they probably
could remember it for a lifetime.
Reed is a devoted Algebra 1 and Geometry teacher for Blythewood High
School. She tries her best every day to make sure each student meets the South
Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards.
She does all of these things, and she is also the head of all the Math
Seminar classes.
Math Seminar is a program for students who need a better understanding
of Algebra 1. Many students will go to "Foundation" instead of
Algebra 1, and this is a huge problem, because students need Algebra 2 before
they can even try getting into college. Math Seminar gives them this chance to
prove they can take Algebra and be successful in it also.
Reed has been teaching Math Seminar for three years now.
“The kids who have taken Math Seminar have had at least for the last
two years have had 90% passing or higher on the math end of course exam.”
Reed actually came up with the whole program at Blythewood High School
when she was working on her doctorate. She had conducted some research on
student expectations and taking higher level classes other than what the
teachers recommended, and she came up with the program at USC and asked the
principal at that time, Mr. Keith Price, if she could start this program at
Blythewood.
“To see the growth in the students, to push them, to get the
opportunity to teach them outside of math and see their excitement and the fact
that they are taking a college prep class and doing well,” Reed said.
Many other teachers feel Reed’s program helps students more and can
see a difference in the students’ achievements in Algebra 1, they love working
with Reed and thinks she is an amazing teacher and person. For example, Melinda
Lee a math teacher who works with Reed, and likes the idea of having a program
like Math Seminar.
Lee loves teaching with Reed and Reed has taught her so much since she
has been at BHS.
“Dr.Reed is an amazing teacher and what makes her so amazing is the
fact that she has a true heart for the students that she teaches, she also has
a big heart for the people that she works with, she wants the best for
everybody and it comes through.”
Lee says she also thinks that Math Seminar is a great idea because it
allows teachers to double-dip students in math during the day so they get to go
to a regular class, and then they get to have another class with an Algebra
teacher who re-enforces what they been
doing on a regular day in class or pre-teaches the lesson so that the students
can become more successful.
Reed pushes students to do their best and only their best, because
there are some people who don't think these students can do this or are able to
do this. These students need to prove
them wrong, but students have to want to do well according to Reed. Reed does
really care about her students and it shows because she wouldn't have made this
program if she didn't.
Freshman Jordyn O'Neal is one of Reed’s hardworking students. O’Neal
says “she likes being in her class and she feels invited.”
O’Neal considers Math Seminar a blessing and it helps her understand
the material better and gives her chance to pre-learn it and have an idea of
what's going to be coming.
Reed has been a big help to students and teachers and will help many
more.
