Rey of Hope

*Contains 'The Force Awakens' spoilers*

BY CLAIRE DUPRE, Freshman
BLYTHEWOOD- The biggest movie of the year, “Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens”, came out on December 18. It hit the big screen with a bang.

Most people have seen it already and know that Rey is the main character of the film. She is an orphan that lives on the planet of Jakku.

Since she is an orphan she doesn't know her parents, but does she now? Rey has been on Jakku her whole life waiting for her parents to come back and get her.

There are many hints during the movie that Luke Skywalker is her father, but it has not been confirmed and will not be until “Star Wars VIII” comes out in December of 2017.

Some hint in the film are the planet Jakku is a planet just like the planet of Tatooine, where Luke and Anakin Skywalker lived.

Rey has a natural aptitude for flying ships which Anakin (Darth Vader) pod raced when he was young.

Towards the middle of the episode Rey finds Luke’s lightsaber and it is calling to her, which is a major hint. She finds it in the downstairs of Maz Kanata’s castle.

When she touches the lightsaber it shows Rey her past and future. It also shows the duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, from the original Star Wars trilogy, in Cloud City.

“Luke could be Rey’s father because she had such a strong connection to his lightsaber. Also he went into seclusion and had to give her away and he was the last of the Jedi, he couldn’t care for her at that time,” says Chip Dupre.

Maz Kanata is over one thousand years old and she is very wise, when Rey comes into visit her for transportation she starts to talk about everyone’s eyes.

When she gets to Rey she says “I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes... I know your eyes!”

According to Buzzfeed, “The filmmakers are intentionally mirroring beats from the original trilogy and will not be able to resist echoing the most famous moment of “The Empire Strikes Back.”

When Rey is holding the lightsaber in the background Luke is saying ‘That’s not true...that’s impossible’ from “The Empire Strikes Back”.

Another thought is the force is very strong with her and in the Skywalker family.

“Rey quickly learns the Force is strong in her. Seemingly without any training, she’s able to resist Kylo Ren, perform Jedi mind tricks on others, and use the lightsaber that belonged to Anakin and Luke Skywalker,” BGR.com said.

Another theory is that Rey is a Kenobi and her father isn’t Luke, it is Obi-Wan.

According to Mr Sunday Movies Youtube Video, The Rey Kenobi Theory, Rey is very powerful at using the Jedi mind tricks as Kenobi was.

Rey and Kylo Ren’s relationship seems to be very similar to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship.

Obi-Wan also appears in the vision Rey has with the lightsaber. You can hear both young Kenobi and older Kenobi saying, “Rey these are your first steps”.

Luke’s lightsaber was first owned by Kenobi for many years, longer than Luke had it.

The last theory is that Rey is Leia and Han’s daughter.

She could be the sister of Kylo Ren, because in the books Han and Leia have twins named Jacen and Jaina Solo. For the movie the names could have been easily changed to Rey and Ben.

Kylo Ren seems to have an interest in Rey, but we don’t know why yet. In the dream he looked like he was saving her from the killing of the Jedi.

Rey used the force on Kylo Ren when he was interrogating her when she was captured.

So the truth won’t be revealed until the next movie, but now who do you think Rey’s parents are?
