Fine Arts Are Questioned Important

BY LAUREN ALARCON, Freshman
BLYTHEWOOD-- An ongoing question for several schools is, “Are the art programs and education such as visual arts, dance, and drama courses helpful to the learners?"

“Years of research show that it's linked to almost everything that we, as a nation, say we want for our children: academic achievement, social and emotional development,” according to an article by Fran Smith: “Why Art's Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best”.

The evidence, in this instance, is significant, and it is confirmed that research states it is imperative to a student's learning process. It most importantly equips them for their future in the real world.

Ariana Caldwell has various classes fine arts associated, such as chorus and dance. “I’ve always felt the fine art classes are helpful, it’s what I enjoy and look forward to at school,” Caldwell a freshman at BHS said.

Unfortunately, there are additional viewpoints on this timely dispute, as to why the arts are not only unnecessary, but distract the student's learning process from their academic classes.

“Fine arts are classes that interest most students, but I think they replace the classes that are essential academically,” Jennifer Alarcon said, a mother to Nick Alarcon that has attended BHS.

Overall the majority of people state that they believe art programs and education are essential to students and it has been documented by numerous authorizations and produce further valid evidence and prove that it is in truth "helpful".

“I don’t see why it wouldn’t, it’s a good break from my academic classes that can be boring,” Nick Alarcon, a former BHS student said.
