Spigner role model for Bengal students

BY EMERY TURNER, Freshman

BLYTHEWOOD--On the night of the Miss Blythewood pageant which was meant to be all about the glitz and glamour of Blythewood High School Fletcher Spigner and colleague Marc Turner decided to dress up in 1970s leisure suits just to get a good laugh.

“Mr. Spigner has a very dry sense of humor and is very sarcastic but he is a very great leader,” senior Abby Truitt said.

Spigner is the student activities director at Blythewood High School. Although he can be funny at times, he does not let his humor get in the way of what is important to him.

Spigner started off at Blythewood when it opened as a science teacher and a lead teacher. He now enjoys working as student activities director. Spigner works with what  students can do dealing with anything from academics to athletics.

“My school life is awesome, fun, stressful, challenging, and different everyday,” Spigner said.

School is not the only stress Spigner has to deal with. Having three young kids also adds to the craziness of his life. However he says neither his school life or his life at home is more stressful, it is balancing the work in both environments is where things start to get tricky.

Spigner describes himself as an honest man. However his students and fellow teachers have described him as intelligent, easy to work with, an excellent teacher, and a good colleague.

According to Turner, Spigner has other interest outside of his school life.

“Mr. Spigner is very passionate about his fĂștbol. He is also a very good guitar player,” Turner said.
Turner talked about how Spigner enjoyed watching his favorite team Arsenal when they have games. As for the guitar skills Turner said Spigner and him have played together on multiple occasions, sometimes even for the kids at school.

Even though Spigner enjoys these different activities he does not let it get in the way of his work with the school.

“Mr. Spigner gives kids an opportunity to show leadership and service to the community,” Turner said.

Spigner gives kids a chance in student activities to do great things at Blythewood. He lets them learn how to be a leader through planning different things around the high school.

“Spigner has shaped me into a better leader. He has forced me to think about all of the options and consequences before making a decision,” Truitt said.

Spigner talked about what he liked about working in student activities. He loves working with kids because they are much more fun than adults, and they are young so they keep him on his toes. He also mentioned he does not plan most of the activities at the school.

Students run these events and my role is to support and guide them. Literally every student event at our school is planned, organized, and led by students,” Spigner said.

However Spigner said his favorite part about his job would have to be getting to have a great relationship with students, even getting to know their families, and just watching the students grow from the time they are a freshman to the time they are a senior.

“Spigner helps orchestrate all of the great student activities that we do at our school: pep rallies, holiday wishes, and dance marathon. He helps to guide the students in charge in the right direction,” Truitt said.

Spigner puts hard work into everything he does with the school.

“He knows how he wants things done and will make sure that he attains that goal,” Truitt said.

Student activities has a lot that goes and comes with it. However Spigner seems to manage it all.

“There is a lot of planning, organizing, arguing, and thinking that goes on before an event is planned,” Spigner said.

Although, he is willing to do whatever it takes to get his set goal or plan. If there is something that needs to be done it will get done.

Spigner is always looking out for his students and continues to love working with them. He is here to help and watch all the students grow throughout high school. He really enjoys his job as student activities director. Students much like Abby find him as a great addition to Blythewood and enjoy working with him when they help out on different events around the school. He helps make his students great role models around the high school.

“Mr. Spigner is a great colleague, a great collaborator, an excellent teacher, and has been a partner of mine in some of the my most creative moments as a teacher,” Turner said.
