BLYTHEWOOD-- On Sept. 17, chaos erupted as gunshots from multiple cars hit eight people and critically injured the eight people involved in what is known to be the “heart of Columbia,” also called The Vista.

According to “Gun Violence Archive,” 11,165 people have died or been critically injured in 2017 since January due to people shooting others.

“I think that with the generation that we’re in now, everything is turned into hatred and turned around to be cruel. People look for the bad instead of the good,” said junior Sydney Nichols.

Gun shootings and “drive bys” have been much more common in the U.S. in the last 2 years. Some are triggered by certain people and some are just to do it, to possibly be a part of a gang.

“About 80 percent of gun homicides have been gang-related,” According to the Huffington Post

“I think you have to have a serious mental breakdown to do such an act,” said Melissa Chaney, mother of two. “Movies making it seem cool, video games glorifying it.”

According to The New York Daily news, records show 27 million guns were sold in the U.S in 2016, 4 million more than 2015.

“The more violence we have, the more problems we’re going to have,” said Nichols
