Boxing as a High School Sport

BY MARKEL SAMUEL, Freshman
BLYTHEWOOD-- Considered one of the most dangerous sports in the world boxing could potentially be a high school sport.

According to The Guardian, 12 percent of high schools in the United States have boxing or MMA as an elective Physical Education class. But boxing is more popular in the U.K. Based on statistics from England Boxing Corporation (E.B.C.) 35 percent of schools in the United Kingdom have a boxing team.

The reason for a better percentage of schools who have boxing teams are higher there than in the U.S. is because it's also legal for them to have boxing teams in the U.K. There is a bigger population of pro British boxers.

“Boxing should return to schools as a sport because it teaches discipline, and morals, while it also gives a good fitness lesson,” according to journalist Tony Parsons.

But Parsons also said that it should not be a competitive sport in high schools unless waivers are signed and students are aware of the dangers of boxing.

Blythewood High School Athletic Trainer Steven Meisel said there were eight concussion cases at BHS last year and of those eight, five were minor head injuries.”

Meisel also said, “Concussions come from careless play and unawareness, if you are careful you're less likely to obtain a head injury”.

This school also has a concussion protocol which should be followed. The protocol states that the parent should know the risk prior to physical sporting activities and notified right away when head injuries occur and victims must get approved by a doctor to return to physical sports.
